\u2022 St. Patrick\u2019s Day is observed on \nMarch 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint \nof Ireland. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and \nhistory. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 The name \u201clephrechaun\u201d has several origins. It could be from the \nIrish Gaelic word \u201cleipreachan,\u201d which means \u201ca kind of aqueous sprite.\u201d\n Or, it could be from \u201cleath bhrogan,\u201d which means \u201cshoemaker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Some American towns have \u201cIrish\u201d names. They include: Mount \nGay-Shamrock, West Virginia; Shamrock Lakes, Indiana; Shamrock, \nOklahoma; Shamrock, Texas; Dublin, California and Dublin, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 St. Patrick\u2019s Day was first celebrated in America in Boston, \nMassachusetts, in 1737. Approximately 34 million Americans claim Irish \nancestry. That\u2019s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has \nabout 4.1 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Despite what you may have heard, St. Patrick never banished snakes \nfrom Ireland. In fact, no snakes exist or ever existed there.
